Hafwen means ‘summer’ in Welsh. Haf – pronounced ‘Haav’ is the shortened version, and is a pretty girl’s name. Summer is an important time for the bees. By this time of year they should be at full strength, with up to 60,000 bees in the hive and the queen laying up to 2000 new eggs a day. That’s a lot of mouths to feed! So the bees will be really busy looking for food.
Hafwen bees were originally a swarm from another hive at our Bodnant apiary. Swarms are the bees’ way of reproducing. Without swarms, bees would die out! We found the swarm underneath the solar panel that powers our live ‘Bee Cam’. They came to their new home in July and have thrived here since then.
