Hafwen means ‘summer’ in Welsh. Haf – pronounced ‘Haav’ is the shortened version, and is a pretty girl’s name. Summer is an important time for the bees. By this time of year they should be at full strength, with up to 60,000 bees in the hive and the queen laying up to 2000 new eggs a day. That’s a lot of mouths to feed! So the bees will be really busy looking for food.
The Hafwen bees are a new colony brought to the apiary in the autumn of 2017. Unfortunately, the bad summer weather of that year led to the loss of all our hives. The new Hafwen colony is thriving, with the bees getting down to their business of making honey.
