Heather

Heather (Grug)

Heather is a very special source of nectar for the bees, and people either love or hate heather honey, with its distinctive strong flavour. Heather flowers late in the beekeeping season in late July and August and provides the bees with a source of food when there’s little else available.

Our heather bees were also from a swarm in the summer of 2014. At the NBCW Visitor Centre we often get calls from members of the public who have a swarm on their property. If they’re close by we can go and take the bees away and give them a new home. Our heather bees were a medium sized swarm, but they’ve filled their new hive with comb and honey and are well set for the winter.
