Willow

Willow (Helygen)

Willow is an important source of pollen for the bees in early spring. They need a lot of pollen at this time of year, as the queen begins to build up the colony again ready for summer. Pollen provides protein and is baby food for bees, so lots of pollen means lots of new bees!

Willow is nestled in the corner of the apiary, sheltered by two hedges. This seems to be the prime spot as Willow has expanded to two hives now. The colony is very strong and filled the first hive. In order to prevent the queen swarming with half the bees, our beekeeper was able to rehome the queen and some of the bees in a nearby hive, leaving a new queen to emerge and take control of the first hive.
